Hi,
"Most people get fewer colds in the summer than in the winter."
1. "colds" is in plural in this sentence. Is it correct?
2. I have two sentences which are the same as the original one. I chose (a) but I am not sure.
a. A person is more likely to get a cold in winter.
b. The winter is much colder than the summer.
Thanks.

  • Hi there,

    1. Yes, this sentence is grammatically correct, because cold is a noun.

    2.

    a) A person is more likely to get a cold in the winter.

    b) Winter is much colder than summer. (I don't think you need the "the"s because you are referring to winter and summer in general.)

If "Most people get fewer colds in the summer than in the winter," then it follows logically that "a person is more likely to get a cold in winter."
It is not necessary to put "the" before winter in the second clause.

    Hi, Joelline.
I'm surprised that you understand what I mean perfectly.
    Thanks.

    b. The Winter is much colder than the summer. Forgive me, but this will sound silly to an English-speaking person. Of course winter is colder than the summer. Ice is colder than fire, too!
    Thanks.
    Hope that helps. :)

    Padre,

FYI, You incorrectly attributed "b. The Winter is much colder than the summer. Forgive me, but this will sound silly to an English-speaking person. Of course winter is colder than the summer. Ice is colder than fire, too!" to Mimi, but b.... is not a Mimi2 quote and was not her error.
