Could someone please explain this expression to me and give me other examples.

Il est très fier => he is very proud

Il est très fier de sa personne => he is pretentious.

être fier de sa personne is idiomatic, it is another way to say pretentious and it is never a compliment, although in some context (within relatives or friends) it may be used to tease someone more than to criticize them.

Merci bien! Encore mille merci!

the meaning here is totally different: it means he is good looking and it is a compliment.

    It is idiomatic as well.

Basically in this two idioms I would say de sa personne refers to what he is (body and/or accomplishments), what makes him the person he is/ has became.
