Fill the void

I said 'I guess I'll fill the void' when I was in a online conversation with some people and they were struggling to find something to say (there was nothing much to say), in order to break the ice and join the conversation (I didn't say anything before that).

I'm wondering if 'fill the void' sounds natural here. Thank you.

It’s an unusual expression in that context, but perfectly acceptable, I would think. Such a gap in a conversation is usually referred to as an awkward (or embarrassing) silence.
