'Then, in a fine burst of pseudoscience, one young physician blasted coffee, asserting...' Here the author is talking about false claims that circulated about coffee, mostly due to ignorance and prejudices... so I think that 'fine' could be interpreted as ironic... so what about ' poi, in una superba esplosione di pseudoscienza...'.     In this type of sentence fine is used as an intensifier, intensifying the word burst. In phrases such as a fine fury, a fine rage it is the extreme quality of fury/rage that is being expressed.
