    This is just a guess (never heard of this expression).

    Private detectives sometimes have to follow someone all the time, so they may not have time to shave; the phrase 'five o'clock shadow' refers to the dark growth of beard that can be seen at the end of the day (if the man has shaved that morning).

    Hi grgatzby,

    "Five-o-clock shadow" is the stubble that grows back on a man's face by the afternoon, assuming he hasn't shaved since the morning.
