Hello,

Although I'm English, I'm unsure of the meaning of this phrase. If anyone can help, please let me know!

In context:

Judi Dench and Bob Hoskins were like 'flint and steel'.

Thanks,

Lucinda

When you knock them together you get sparks.

    All very figurative, of course.

Once upon a time, flint and steel were used to strike sparks onto tinder in order to create fire. Flint-lock weapons worked the same way.

Thanks so much ... it's quite shameful that I didn't understand it, being a native English speaker! *hangs head in shame*

    Cheers :)
