flower in the gut

Senior Member
Good morning everybody. (It is morning here in Italy.)

In the following sentence, from The Miniaturist by Jessie Burton:

"True love was a flower in the gut, its petals unfurling inside out. You would risk all for love – blissful, never without its drops of dismay."

should I understand "gut" as stomach, belly? It is not an idiom, is it?
