Does the bolded part in the above sound right? Is it better to reword it as the following? Thanks.

    I think your second effort is good. You can use a semicolon after "self-evident" instead of a period/full stop if you want.

    The problem with the first sentence is "that". Removing it, as you did in the second, takes care of it very nicely. :)
