I would like to know whether or not sentence (1) below is a correct English sentence.

(1) Da Vinci is European, for he is Italian.

Is sentence (1) grammatically correct?

    It is grammatically correct, but it is awkward and falsely assumes that Leonardo da Vinci is still alive.

    However, if da Vinci in sentence (1) is a person defferent from Leonardo da Vinci, isn't sentence (1) awkward?
