forced to get used to it

"Dans la cité la violence est anormale à tel point que les gens qui y vivent sont forcés à s’y habituer"

I'm doing a study of La Haine, and I want to say:

"In the 'cité' violence is normal to such an extent that the people who live there are forced to get used to it"

Am I at all close?!

Thanks!

    That translation is correct, yes.

For "cité" (as in "cité HLM") you could also use "scheme" (as in "housing scheme")

Are you sure of the original sentence?

"Dans la cité la violence est anormale à tel point que les gens qui y vivent sont forcés à s’y habituer"
Should be "... violence is ABNORMAL to such an extent...", which is possible considering the movie. That would be a 'turn of phrase' highlighting the fact that despite violence has raised to an abnormal level, people are still forced to get used to it.
