Hi everybody, I'm so  . Please help me out with this. What does forge ahead. I'll give you the sentence:

I would forge ahead, slide off on to one pedals, (he is on a bike) jump down, and half open the gates.

Andrò a tutta velocità, mi metterò su un pedale solo, salto giù e apro a metà uno dei cancelli.

Grazie
Elisa

  • I'm unclear on whether you wanted the answer in English or Italian. Forge means to advance gradually but firmly or to advance with a burst of speed. Does this fit in with additional context of your writings? This meaing of forge isn't used much in modern American English and doesn't sound very natural to me and in fact rather awkward in your sentence.

Doe's DDT's suggestion still work for this meaning? ....since it doesn't work in the literal sense...

I guess it might work for my suggestion is a slang way to say "advance with a burst of speed" which makes no sense in the literal sense, I do agree! ;)
I consider "a tutta velocità" might work as well, yet that implies a different nuance

    DDT

Non capisco se la frase è al passato o al condizionale... oltretutto le due definizioni date da DesertCat mi sembrano un po' in antitesi, e la traduzione di DDT potrebbe andare nel secondo caso, ma non nel primo. L'inglese a volte è proprio tricky!

It makes perfect sense to me. ;)

In the above stated context I would think it means to advance with a burst of speed. :D
