Hello, in the following sentence, what does "formally acknowledged" mean?

The operating manual must be read and formally acknowledged.

Is this phrase the same as "understand well"?

    Hello Satoimo, and welcome.

Can you give the context for the sentence? Where does it come from?

    Thank you, Hildy1.

This sentence comes from a manufacturing procedure document defining procedures to form an assembly.
The operating manual in the sentence refers to a manual of a laser welder.

    Thank you for the answer.

It might mean that someone has to sign a form or statement saying that he/she has read and understood the operating manual.
