A woman in the novel I'm translating is talking about how she is always defending and covering up for her older brother, and she calls herself the "founding patron" of his "Defense Fund". I was wondering about this "founding patron" - does it mean that she is both the founder and the main patron of the fund? There is, of course, no real fund, it's just a metaphor.

If she indeed describes herself as "the" founding patron, you are almost correct. But the sentence gives us no clue as to whether she is the "main" contributor.
