FR: go to - aller à / dans - préposition

I translated "We want to go quickly to the small square." as "Nous voulons aller rapidement dans la petite place." But the textbook answer was "Nous voulons aller rapidement à la petite place." Is my answer wrong?

Same question on another one: I translated "He can go to the centre." as "Il peut aller dans le centre." But the text book answer was "Il peut aller au centre."
 
    • "aller à une place" is correct. "dans" describes a place where you rest:

    I'm in a house.
    Je suis dans une maison.

    I can go to this house.
    Je peux aller à cette maison.

    BUT "à" could also describe a place where you rest, for example:

    Je suis à Paris en ce moment.
    I'm in Paris right now.

    Places (points on a map) or residences are always used with "à", I think, not "dans". ;)

    Your textbook is right. In both cases they're places and so it's aller à (to), not aller dans (in).

    Here are some other examples:

    aller à la banque (a + la)

    aller au marché (à + le)

    aller aux boutiques ( à + les)

    aller à l'hotel (à + l')
     
    But then why does it say in the same textbook "Je veux aller dans le centre." as a translation for "I want to go to the centre."?
     
    Well, then it's much easier to be the person answering:

    A: On va dans la boutique?
    B: Oui, on y va.
    C: Non, on n'y va pas.

    A: Pourrais-tu aller à cette maison?
    B: Oui, je peux y aller.
    C: Non, je ne peux pas y aller. (y before or after pouvoir? :confused: )

    A: Allez sur WordReference Forums, puis dans le forum French-English.
    B: Ah merci, je vais y aller.
    C: Ouais, cela ne m'interesse pas. Je ne vais pas y aller.

    Please correct the word order. :eek:

    except that I wouldn't say "aller à une maison" that much, or maybe in a game.
    Tu dois aller à la maison du sage et trouver un objet qui est caché dans le jardin autour
