FR: hardly any signs of them were found

Lady of Shalott

Australian English
I'm just a little confused about the appropriateness of using 'en' to replace a person or people.

This is my sentence: on n’a guère trouvé trace des enfants.

Is it more correct to write: on n'en a guère trouvé trace OR on n’a guère trouvé trace d’eux.

The context is creative writing, so a more literary register is required.
