    I don't know whether “common” is the appropriate adjective, but adverbs (or adverbial phrases) are definitely possible and used, especially in writing.

    In you example, both dédaigneusement and avec dédain are possible, but for some reason I prefer the latter (maybe because the former is quite long).

    Yes, it seems to be a general trend that the French prefer an adverbial phrase and the English an adverb. A good way of reducing an over-long sentence when translating French => English!
