FR: I hate people who laugh too loudly - mode

"I hate people who laugh too loudly." Translation engines translate this as: "Je déteste les gens qui rient trop fort."
I am just learning the use of the French subjunctive, and I am not sure if the subjunctive could/should be used in this case.
I would appreciate the reasoning for this.

Hello, and welcome, le truite :)

No, no need for the subjunctive here. Subjunctive is used in a subordinate proposition introduced by "que" to express a doubt, a wish, something that is not sure to happen, something uncertain, a feeling, an obligation...

    So :

The first proposition with "que" seems really unlikely and scarcely idiomatic to me.

We would rather say "quand" as "when".

Unlike subordinate clauses, which typically take the subjunctive, relative clauses usually take the indicative.

(subordinate clause)
Je déteste que les gens soient grossiers. (subordinate clause)

The first proposition with "que" seems really unlikely and scarcely idiomatic to me.
I beg to disagree. I see nothing wrong with détester que. A few examples:

By the way, there is an important nuance:

= I hate people who laugh too loudly. (The people are hated.)
= I hate it when people laugh too loudly. (The situation is hated.)
