The first pronoun
elles is the regular personal pronoun. The second occurrence is the
disjunctive pronoun. It is used to clarify the meaning of
aussi. As a matter of fact, if you omit the disjunctive pronoun (
Il faut qu'elles goûtent ça aussi), the sentence is ambiguous. It may mean:
- They should taste this food on top of some other food.
- They should taste this food like some other people have.
With the disjunctive pronoun, only the second meaning is possible:
Il faut qu'elles goûtent ça, elles aussi. (Note: a comma should ideally be used before the disjunctive pronoun.)
In a nutshell:
Il faut qu'elles goûtent ça, elles aussi = They
, too, should taste this. (unambiguous)
Il faut qu'elles goûtent ça aussi = They should taste this
too. (ambiguous in both French and English)
