When talking to death, should you address it with a definite article?

More specifically, should I translate Donne's line "Death be not proud" as "Mort, ne sois pas fière/orgueilleuse" or "La Mort [mort], ne sois pas fière/orgueilleuse"?

And should I capitalise "mort"?

  • If death is personified, I would capitalize the word and omit the article: (Ô) Mort, ne sois pas fière… Otherwise I'd use the article but no capitalization. I would simply match Donne's choice. I would thus translate the last line as follows: Et la mort ne sera plus ; Mort, tu mourras.
