Hi evryone,
Here is a sentence confusing me,
Quand il avait du temps, il aide toujours ses camarades.

Why the two words are juxtaposed here? Shouldn't the "avait" be replaced by "a"?

Thank you very much.

Imparfait, passé composé and present can be mingled in a sentence in some cases. For example:

"J'étais triste quand on m'a blessé."

The 'il avait' means 'he had'.
The 'il aide' means 'he helps'.

For a more detailed answer, wait for natives and fluents, they're mostly sleeping now :).

    Deux suggestions:

Quand il avait du temps, il aidait toujours ses camarades.

Quand il a du temps, il aide toujours ses camarades.

    I agree with Gil.
Your original sentence is grammatically wrong, and it IS :
    either: avait+ aidait
    or
    a + aide.
