    Bonjour

    Voici ma phrase en français pour le contexte :

    L'avion à réaction explose dans un fracas assourdissant.

    Et ma traduction anglaise :

    The airplane explodes in a deafening noise.

    Quel est le meilleur équivalent anglais pour "fracas assourdissant" selon le contexte de ma phrase? (réponses AE et BE si différentes svp)

    Vos suggestions svp

    Merci:).

    Hi Syagrius. Your version is spot on, imo for "fracas assourdissant'; only a slight tweak is needed:

    The airplane explodes in with a deafening noise

    L'avion à réaction is a jet. Deafening or ear-splitting work well for assourdissant.

    Yes, some people also say, in the UK, "there was a little fracas in the pub, this evening" (good English understatement > a little = a large :D). We'd say it mostly 'tongue in cheek' to mean a noisy quarrel, a fight or a brawl.

    Yes, the French use the term to (mostly) mean a large noise.
    The original Q was:
    Fracas = noise
    Assourdissant = deafening
    Which is something we Brits would also say: a deafening noise :)
