Frayed from the vat?

She shows me the brick she found under linoleum and the shutters Walter bought in a junkyard. It bothers her that when the paint was removed the shutters came somewhat frayed from the vat.

What does "vat" mean here? I looked it up in the dictionary but couldn't find an answer that makes sense here.

Could anyone help me out? Thanks a lot.
