Fringuellino

Hi
I need some help with the translation of fringuellino.

It's used in the context of a children's book, where the grandfather refers to his 5 year old grandson in this way
"Sei pronto per la scuola, fringuellino?"

I though about young man, but I'm not sure that it conveys the "smallness" and maybe flitty nature of the chaffinch. Old chap was another option that I considered but not sure that it really fits with the context Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance

"Little turtledove" si potrebbe dire ad un bambino? Oppure "little lamb", "little poppet"?

"Fringuellino" è molto simpatico come nomignolo, è sfizioso. "Little fella" sarebbe "giovanotto/ometto". Non esistono nomignoli con nomi di animali in inglese?
