Hi everyone

Last October the first parade in Podgorica, the capital of EU-hopeful Montenegro, had almost 2,000 police protecting 150 marchers from ten times as many protesters.

Can anyone help paraphrase the words in red above for me? I'm not sure what it actually means. Thank you!

The context of gay marchers and protesters who don't like gay marchers doesn't actually make any difference to the meaning. The only possible way of interpreting the sentence is that the marchers and protesters do not agree. If they did the marchers would not need police protection.

The word "marchers" does not necessarily imply protest. People can march in support of something or in protest against something.
