full flame

This is a metaphor of a family crisis

We had to prevent the spark just reignited from bursting into a full flame.

I struggle with the full flame part.

What if you change the first bit, instead of the second?
Qualifying it strikes me as unnecessary, because sparks don't sit around getting old. Changing l'étincelle to cette étincelle might give a greater sense of immediacy if you think it needs it...? Otherwise perhaps try finding a different way around that part.
