What does the word "further" mean in the following sentence?

"Will you further the wartime or help protect the world from it?"

The word further in that sentence is a verb, meaning to move something forward or progress it – as in "he was anxious to further his career".

However, the sentence doesn't make much sense! You can't further a wartime – only a war, or a wartime effort.
