I'm struggling with what seems an usual usage of 'gagner'. The context is a speech about Franco-Polish relations, and this bit specifically about the Polish government in exile in WW2 moving to England:
"le general Sikorski mettait sur pied une armée polonaise libre de plus de 80 000 hommes, avant que la défaite française de juin 1940 ne le contraigne à gagner l’Angleterre."
My effort so far: "the French defeat of 1940 forced it to decamp to England"
