Hi! I would like to know if there are other words in English that are read in a completely different way from thr one you would think of looking at the word.
examples: gaol that is read like jail
and colonel that will be pronounced like koronel
In British and Canadian pronunciation, "Lieutenant" is pronounced as "leftenant." Note that the spelling "gaol" is not used in the US, and many Americans would not recognize the word if it were spelled that way.
