garbage shaft in apartment buildings

Hi,

I have a question about what to call the garbage area in my apartment building. We have a garbage tube located in a shaft open to the sky. This shaft runs through the building. So should I call this are garbage shaft then? I was wondering whether there's a standard name for it where you live.

When you take out the trash you open a door to this shaft and there's a small landing leading to the garbage tube (is it called a garbage tube?). The rest of the area is this shaft running from the top of the building to the ground.

Thank you!

I've heard this called a "garbage chute". It rhymes with "shoot".
I once lived in a house which had a laundry chute. A bit of overkill it was, because it dropped down only one floor. All the bedrooms were upstairs, and dirty laundry (clothes and bed linen) would get thrown down it, ending up in the utility room, where the washing machine was.

Oh, I remember now about garbage chute for the tube. Thank you! But what about the shaft itself that's open to the sky?

Air shaft, garbage chute, coal chute, laundry chute.

Collins English Dictionary likes airshaft; most other dictionaries don't.
