Gather information "on" or "about" ?

English, Mandarin

Do you say ..

"Probes gather information about the distant planets" or

"Probes gather information on the distant planets"?

Which is correct or there really isn't any difference?

Thanks in advance!

Both are fine, though I generally would use "about" in that case to make sure that it is not misunderstood that the probes are physically on the distant planets.

The first sentence is very clear. They second sentence makes it sound like the probes are actually on the surface of the planets. Although "Probes gather information on distant planets" can have the same meaning as "...about distant planets", it can also mean that the probes have landed on those planets.
