    Hi,

I looked up the word "gathering" in some dictionary, ours and this one. And I gathered that the word is quite formal. It's used in some formal occasions like gathering to protest, gathering for a meeting, etc. I wonder if it could work as "party".

Will you come to tonight's gathering?

Is it natual to say to my female middle school classmate?

    Thanks a lot

It's fine, though a little formal, as you say. I suggest get-together, which sounds much more like an informal occasion.

    Thanks a lot, E2e.

I wonder when "get-together" work as a noun, should it be put like this:

Will you come to tonight's get together?

    Thanks a lot

No, it should have the hyphen, as e2efour wrote it. It is listed in our dictionary: get-together
