geomagnetic perturbation/disturbance

< Previous | Next >
Dear friends!

When speaking about rapid changes in geomagnetic data which collocation is idiomatic:

1) geomagnetic perturbation
2) geomagnetic disturbance

I have found both in the dictionary, but I am inclined to think that "disturbance" is the only correct word.

I don't know if there is any special scientific meaning with "perturbation". All it suggests to me is a higher-register word with the same meaning. "Disturbance" is used frequently in such contexts.
