get her hand through the iron ring

Senior Member

Please help me with this sentence.

(The German authorities has condemned Edith Cavell to death. The execution comes very quickly. )
Why this blind haste? Is the Military Machine afraid that mercy might somehow get her hand through the iron ring? (from Edith Cavell)

What does the underlined part mean?

Thank you very much.

I assume "the iron ring" means the "trigger guard" of the gun that would kill her. The act of "Mercy" is being 'personalised' here - hence 'get her hand through'. i.e. Do they think that there might be some divine intervention?
