Hi,
Here are some words from the novel Lady Chatterley's Lover(para. 44) by Lawrence(the University of Adelaide, here):

"And the moment you begin to be aware of your body, you are wretched. So, if civilization is any good, it has to help us to forget our bodies, and then time passes happily without our knowing it."

"Help us to get rid of our bodies altogether,"said Winterslow. "It’s quite time man began to improve on his own nature, especially the physical side of it."
Please notice the words in red. Since that "we've got rid of our bodies(the bodies don't exist any longer)", how can we "improve on the physical side of our bodies"? It's impossible for us to improve something that doesn't exist, I think.
Could you give me a helping hand please?
Thank you in advance

    He's talking metaphorically.

It's not our bodies we are improving on but our nature.

The suggestion isn't that we should cease to exist, but that we should give physical, bodily, concerns less prominence.

Do you mean "physical side of it" = "physical side of nature"?
