Get some knowledge of a plant/ get to know it

I'm buying a few pots of the same plant but I'd like to have one for a few months to understand how it behaves at my place.
Can I say that I'm trying to get to know it?
Or you usually don't get to know a plant and :D I should rather use other expressions.

I would say something like "I want to get a feel for how well it does in my place."
