getting better mileage

If someone says "I'm getting better mileage now" when driving, does he means he's driving in a more fuel-efficient way? If not, how should I understand it? Thanks.

All it means is that he is getting more miles to the gallon/litre than previously. We do not know why; all we know is that he is getting better fuel efficiency/mileage. It may, for example, be because he has had his car serviced; it may be because he is driving in such a manner as to improve his fuel efficiency. It may be for some other reason altogether.
