give off, give out [to mean 'communicate' a subtlety]

I was thinking there was a substitute phrasal verb using 'give' for this 'communicate,' but I can't remember it. Is it 'give off' or 'give out' or what? Hmmm, I need your help.

A: Ummm, you used 'wear it' there. That doesn't really communicate the subtlety to the readers.
B: Well, how about 'put it on'?
A: No, I don't think it does either.
B: How about xxx?
A: No, I don't think it does the job either.
C: What do you say to xxx? I think it carries the nuance we are trying to find.
A and B: Yes! How come we didn't think about that!
