Pride and Prejudice, Chapter 1: "... When a woman has five grown—up daughters, she ought to give over thinking of her own beauty. " give over means give up here? Is this an old—fashioned expression?

    'Give over' means 'stop' or 'cease'. According to Chambers English Dictionary (1990) it is a northern dialect expression.
    I think it is well understood as a colloquial term in Britain.
