giving up everything I have/had

Hello.


I am wondering about this sentence:

If I did that I’d be giving up everything I have/had

Is it more idiomatic to use “had” since it’s a hypothetical scenario?

    In general, yes, “had” is more idiomatic when you’re talking about an entirely hypothetical scenario. But even the minimal context you’ve since provided makes a big difference and suggests that the indicative mood might be more appropriate.

    If I moved abroad, I’d be giving up everything I have here.​
