Hi, everyone.

I came across this sentence, and I don't understand the last part of it.
I could not find the definition of the word "midtask" in any dictionaries.
Could anyone help?

Even worse, other sculptors had previously used it, chipping away material to rough out a basic shape but giving up midtask.

Thank you in advance.

mid- anything means in the middle of it – mid-afternoon, mid-morning, midday, in mid-air, mid-century, midstream, etc.

He gave up in the middle of the task, halfway through it.
