go (off) to sleep

Senior Member
She didn't go (off) to sleep until past 3 a.m., and looks vacant today.

I made it up. I came across the phrase "go off to sleep" but can't make a distinction between that and the simple " go to sleep." Could you give me any comments on the difference?

Go off to sleep can be ambiguous. If someone goes off to sleep, it could describe someone moving to a certain place in order to sleep. The person might not necessarily fall asleep then or even fall asleep at all! Or it could describe someone nodding off.

If someone goes to sleep, they fall asleep.
