When you talk about gold, they always say a number and then a word that start with "K" if I am not wrong.

What is the word in english?

Karat tells about the percentage of impurities in gold. 24K is 100% pure gold. 18K is 75% gold and 25% something else.

Pure gold is a very soft metal and would probably be too soft to make into a durable ring.

Sorry, they are two different words.
Karat is the measurement of the percentage of pure gold in an alloy.
Carat is a measurement of the weight of gemstones. A metric carat is 200 milligrams.
They are different words in AE.

In BE, we use only carat, now, for both the weight of a gem-stone and the quality of gold.
UK gold is usually hallmarked with the caratage, in parts per 24, and the fraction, so 9 carat gold is also marked .375.
