GPS vs Sat Nav

Hullo!
The other day I heard the word Sat Nav used in English to describe what I had always called a GPS (because that's what it's called in Spanish) : a satellite navegation device for vehicles.

Is this common use in the English Speaking world, or is it just one of these trademarks that have unofficially become generic names, like Walkman or Hoover?

Thanks in advance!

One thing is to know where you are (GPS), and another to know how to get where you are going (Sat Nav). The Global Positioning System tells you where you are, and a Satellite Navigation program has digital maps that tell you, using the GPS, where you are, where the place where you want to go is, and how to get from one to the other.
