Great to hear from you

One day I saw this phrase and I would like to know in which context I can use it. I think in personal context it's not a problem, but in professional context, if you speak with the director of your department (you're not very friend with him/her), is it possible to write that or is there a polite form?

Thank you in advance : )

Yes, this would be appropiate for friends that have written to you. It would not be at all appriopiate in a professional context, business correspondance etc.

    Hi WR,

when answering a letter from a friend would be more appropriate "It is great to hear from you" or "It was great to hear from you" ?

    Thanks
