a question about this scottish word, which apparently was once used in (northern) England as well.

Are non-Scottish English-speaking people familiar with this word? (I mean, a bit like with "wee" or "bairn" or other words typically associated with Scotland)

It's familiar to me, too. But then I was married to a Scot for a quarter of a century. Without that, I'm not sure that I would know the word:).
