Hi,

Mr Smith always....... when he sees me; I get the feeling he knows something I don't.

a) smirks
b) grins
c) sniggers
d) laughs
e) titters
f) sneers

This is a stand-alone sentence taken from a CPE grammar book. So...?

p.s. (I would choose a but the key says it's b )

Thanks!!!

I'd get a new book. If you get the feeling he knows something you don't that suggests something at least covert if not snide about his behaviour, though not probably malicious - discounting f. I don't see why it couldn't be any of the others.

Like GWB, I think any would be OK - it all depends on the relationship between Mr Smith and me, and what it is that he knows about me.
Perhaps sneers is a little less likely than the others, but I really can't see how anyone could be so categorical as to say that (b) is correct, the others aren't.

I do realise that each option could be appropriate but I followed this definition:

    smirk
    - a smile that expresses satisfaction or pleasure about having done something or knowing something which is not known by someone else

The question that automatically arises is...
"What's the point of preparing such an ambiguous test???"

    Thanks!!!

Now you can imagine my "beloved" students having a gloat at my poor and vague explanation:) (that everything hinges on "bloody" context)

    Anyway...thanks a lot!!!
