This is a phrase from the 1770s made by Pedro Cortés y Larraz, a Catholic archbishop in Guatemala. I can't figure out what he's trying to say with the "hacen terceros" part. Any help?

""Me causa esto mayor horror, porque la embriaguez va acompañada de la deshonestidad, y porque para abandonarse a ambos vicios con increíble exceso, hacen terceros a la muerte y a la imágenes de los santos.""

    Colloquially, I think
"They form a Trinity with Death and the images of the Saints."

i.e they are third party together with Death and the images.

    Hi.

I wouldn't use the word "Trinity", since it has other religious implications. Being from the 1770s, the phrase is constructed in an ancient form (IMO).

It means that, "in order to abandon themselves in unbelievable excess to drunkenness and dishonesty, people combine them with death (or Death, with capital letter, as Dlyons wrote it) and the images of the Saints".

    Regards.
