I'm told this is originally an English word, but it's not one I've heard of.

I gather it means some kind of intensive work session, so my idea is boot camp, but I'm a bit uncomfortable with it.

The original text is
Dans le même élan, le president était présent pour le lancement le 10 janvier d'un hackathon organisé par .....

My shot is (...) a boot camp

    A hackathon is a notion and a word that are now perfectly accepted in some professional environment. The first time I heard about it was from the World Bank. Example here
    Hence, I wouldn't try to translate this word that comes from English
