half-and-half (cooking a cake)

Hi All
I'm trying to improve my ability in cooking so I'm reading Mastering the art of french cooking by Julia Child.
In the meantime I'm reading a pretty recipe for a whimsical chocolate cake (viking cooking school). For the chocolate frosting I need :
1 pound semisweet chocolate, finely chopped
1 pinch fine salt
½ cup half-and-half
2 sticks unsalted butter cut into cubes
2½ cups confectioners' sugar

Someone could help me ? What do you mean with 'half and half ?
