Hi,

Do you think hallucinating here means those jackals bite cause hallucination? Here Judge who has missed his dear dog, is afraid of dangerous things that might happen to his dog.

"Rabid, hallucinating jackals, unable to drink, unable to swallow, might have come from the forest, thirsty, so thirsty....

Many thanks.
It's part of Inheritance of Loss, a novel by Kiran Desai.

The dogs themselves are (presumably) hallucinating -- it has nothing to do with their bite and its effect on others.

The judge's dog had been missed, and judge thinks that maybe jackals come and bite him. Even, "Just two years ago, when they{Jackals} had brought a rabies epidemic into town, the judge had taken Mutt for a vaccine most people could not afford".
